Hallowe’en and all that Hocus Pocus!

thewriteromantics's avatarthewriteromantics

It’s almost October 31st, and that means only one thing…Hallowe’en’s coming! Unless you’ve been on another planet for the last few months, you’ll know that The Write Romantics are publishing an anthology of short stories, all with winter or Christmas themes. It’s called Winter Tales and will be launched on November 8th. We found writing short stories very different to creating the novels we usually work on, and it’s made us look at other short story writers with even more respect and interest. The recent release of a short story anthology entitled Hocus Pocus ’14, really caught our eye. It’s a collection of thirteen tales, each with a spooky twist, ideal for this time of year. We decided to find out more about the anthology and who was behind it…

2014-10-19 19.40.23It seems that Hocus Pocus ’14 was the brainchild of writer and QVC presenter Debbie Flint. She got together a group…

If You Don’t Have a Dream

If You Don’t Have a Dream.

The third member of New Romantics Press talks about her path to publication.

Hold on Tight to Your Dreams

Welcome to my Second Acts Series!

Today, we have Lizzie Lamb chatting about the dream that simmered for over three decades before coming to fruition.

Here’s Lizzie!

lizziepixBriefly describe your first act.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. However, like most aspiring writers I had bills to pay and commitments to meet. I’m not the sort of person who could starve in a garret in order to write, or the kind of woman who would expect her husband/partner to support her financially while she followed a dream. A dream which might never be realised. So the dream went on hold. If I couldn’t be a writer, I decided, I would pour my enthusiasm for writing into helping children fall in love with words and books instead, and stimulate their imagination through story telling.

In 1972 I qualified as a primary school teacher and spent time and energy teaching children…

Guest author June Kearns—coming home to a place you’ve never been before

barbtaub's avatarBarb Taub

It’s extremely rare for me to write to another author and ask permission to review their work. But when I read June Kearns’ The 20’s Girl, the Ghost, and All That Jazz, I immediately asked her to be my guest here so we could talk about her books. (Okay, first I grabbed An Englishwoman’s Guide to the Cowboy because I just couldn’t resist. Then I asked June. Don’t judge me.)

My review follows, but first please join me in welcoming June.

  1. Star War, Star Trek, or Starfly? Star Wars – the start of a long love-affair with Harrison Ford
  2. anigif_enhanced-buzz-orig-3691-1371763000-26Who would you most like to sit next to on an airplane?I’d like to sit between the Dalai Lama and Pope Francis. All that wisdom and serenity would stop me worrying about being suspended thousands of miles above the earth in the tummy of a big metal bird.

Adrienne Vaughan

The New Romantics 4 are delighted to announce that Adrienne Vaughan’s 5 star novel  A Change of Heart has been shortlisted in the Romance Reader Awards at the Festival of Romantic Fiction.

As Sarah Taylor, awards organiser, says: “With the highest number of entries the awards have had in their four year history, the standard this year was exceptionally high with many highly rated novels not making the shortlists. The breath and depth of quality writing in romantic fiction should be celebrated and that’s what these awards are all about.”.You can read the complete lists for all categories here but this is the line up for Adrienne’s category:

Best Author Published

A Change of Heart by Adrienne Vaughan

Mary Bennet by Kate Allan

Sweet Occasions by Linn B Halton

Drumbeats by Julia Ibbotson

Fairlights by Jan Jones

Christmas Yves by Nicola May

The award ceremony is at the Festival of Romantic Fiction on the evening of Saturday 13th September 2014 at Leighton Buzzard Theatre. There are many fabulous events happening at the Festival to interest readers and writers alike. . . .the book fair in Leighton Buzzard High Street from 10am to 3pm and the Traditional Afternoon Tea with the Authors at The Green House, Market Square, Leighton Buzzard. Adrienne will be attending all of these but especially the Awards ceremony in the evening, The other members of the New Romantics 4, sadly cannot attend this year – Lizzie is chasing men in kilts in the highlands of Scotland (all in the interests of research, of course). June is packing up thirty years of her life in boxes prior to moving house and Mags is putting the finishing touches to her second novel. But we all say to our darling Ade – break a leg, sweetie, you have worked so hard to complete your ‘HEART’ trilogy and deserve all the accolades you can win.

Here we are at last years Festival of Romance held in Bedford with all our gorgeous books on display. Hopefully, we’ll all be there next year with our third novels in tow.

  • What inspired you to write this book?

I spend a great deal of time in north-west Norfolk and one day when I was sitting a bench overlooking the marshes the whole story unfolded before me. The heroine, Charlee, had been in my head for ages, begging me…
